Samhain… Man…

I’m a little bit heartbroken and kind of crushed. I have Chrissy Brashear (and Heather Osborn) stories that I’ll tell another time. A time when my heart isn’t so sore.

I’ve talked many times how Joey W Hill’s ROUGH CANVAS was the first m/m *and* the first BDSM novel I fell in love with… But m/m was never EC’s strong seller (to my eventual personal disappointment), and many of my go-to m/m authors came from Samhain.

KA Mitchell. Oh. Em. Gee. I discovered her during a *really* tense time in my life – my Goddaughter was in a bad situation and had come to live with me, I was fighting for her on so many levels, AND working in what was, in reality, an at-risk school. I think I went a good week w out sleeping at one point.

KA Mitchell probably saved my sanity that summer. I started w CHASING SMOKE, and then worked my way through her entire backlist. COLLISION  COURSE remains in my top 5 comfort reads of all time.

JL Langley. The Englor books. LOVE. Passionately.

Jordan Castillo Price. She’s only got the one book there, HEMOVORE. I got the impression it wasn’t universally embraced, but I loved it, and it led me to the Wild Bill & Michael stories (Also on my comfort read shelf!) & PsyCop – I actually LITERALLY finished re-reading the 7 main books this afternoon.

So many amazing authors. Those are just my eatly discoveries Excellent editing, by and large.

And yes, selfishly, I’d hoped to be pubbed there someday, too.

My heart hurts for the authors and the readers. My heart hurts for Chrissy and her team.

My heart especially hurts for all the ePubs being crushed by the leviathan that is Amazon.

That Post Where I Brag…

My Riptide book, Light a Candle came out at a rather tumultuous time in my life… Looking back, I can’t believe it’s been almost a year. Nine months – that’s a baby, y’all!

So, for me, a lot of the joy in the new release was shadowed by stuff happening in “real life”. And, as much as I love Will and Dusty (I really love Dusty… and Leo 🐽), I sort of projected some of those shadows onto the book, and forgot that… Well, I love Will and Dusty, lol. And the educator in me loved playing with Greek history  (even when Joey was afraid of pedophiles popping up – heh, heh, heh.)

Well, some time has passed, and I have the distance to look at my boys and Club Deviant again, with fresh eyes. I like this book. (Is that conceited?)

But! I’m not the only one who likes it! I found out today from my awesome publisher and from my amazing friend that Light a Candle is a finalist in the National Leather Association – International’s PAULINE REAGE NOVEL AWARD.

Not only am I grouped w L.A. Witt / Lauren Gallagher and J.A. Rock, but I’m in a group w Laura Antinou. Great googly mooglies!

So, I hope you’ll check out NLA-I’s various contacts, and I *really* hope you’ll check out Light a Candle.

Congrats to all the nominees in all the categories – I’ll be reading some articles this week, I think!

Joey W Hill Snark!

My Throwback Thursday was my first m/m, the wonderful Rough Canvas, by Joey W Hill. Joey has graciously allowed me to borrow a bit of snark from Marcus and Thomas – and I’ll admit, their snark is pretty hilarious – a great tension breaker in an otherwise VERY intense story.

First, I’ll give you the blurb:

When his father dies, Thomas is forced to abandon a burgeoning art career in New York. As difficult as it was to give up his lifelong dream, it’s nothing compared to walking away from the man he loves. Marcus taught him to embrace who he is, a Sexual submissive who responds to the touch of only one Master. But why would the sophisticated Marcus need some farm kid from the South?

Then Marcus shows up and offers him a way to continue his art career and help his family. There’s only one hitch – he asks Thomas to spend a week with him in the Berkshires. Thomas knows he should refuse. But he’s never been able to say no to his Master.

(IMO, the blurb doesn’t do the story justice – go read the excerpt!)

So, there’s the basic setup.

To give a bit more background, this comes late in the story. Marcus has had a personal tragedy, and Thomas realizes his Dom really *does* need him. After a cathartic night, the head up to the roof garden. Marcus is still a bit shaky…

(T) “I’ll take care of it. Why don’t you just keep on napping? I’m going to finish this idea up, then I’ll wake you and we can head to bed.”

Marcus lay back on the grass. “Fine. But be sure you wake me. You’re feeling so nurturing right now, I don’t want you scooping me up in your manly arms and carrying me back downstairs.”

Thomas sent him an arch look. “Will you beat on my broad chest with your feeble fists if I do?”

“And ruin my manicure? Not likely. I would have [friend] Julie sock you in the eye though. In the morning.”

“Then shut up and go to sleep. I’m working. Trying to make you money to keep you in the manner to which Donald Trump wishes he could become accustomed.”

“Music to my ears…”

There is this and so much more to love – two Alpha males, one submissive  (trust me, it works) and one deliciously Dominant. A perfect combo!

So, contest # 2 for me was a copy of Temair’s Fyre, the first in our (Sierra and mine – writing as Violet Summers) Queens of Merab series at Changeling Books.

VS_TemairsFire_large[1](Note – I think I’m the only one in the world who likes this cover… She’s just so very TEMAIR!)

This one was HARD! So hard I had to cave and give two copies! Carol Coburn and Mary Frolich, how could I possibly choose between you? I’ll be hunting down emails tonight and tomorrow. If you haven’t got your copies of Temair’s Fyre from me by Sunday – STALK ME! Life has a bad habit of distracting me these days – so don’t let me do an “oops” and not send you your books!

Winner #1 – Santa Claus is COMING!

SantaClausIsComing_VJSummersThis one was tough! I mean, I’m reading your traditions and getting all teary… Sheesh! Luckily, I put the onus on Old Dude, and the man is guided by his stomach. So, for the copy of Santa Claus is Coming – out 12/15,  Old Dude insists on Retta’s fudge recipe! Which I’m re-posting here:

2 tablespoons lowfat Butter
2/3 Cup evaporated skim milk
2½ cups Sugar
12 ounce package semi-sweet chocolate chips
2½ ounce baby food prunes
7 ounce jar marshmallow cream
½ cup chopped walnuts
1 teaspoon vanilla

Line a 13 x 9 inch pan with waxed paper and set aside. In a large saucepan, melt Butter. Stir in milk and sugar and bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly. Remove pan from heat and gradually stir in chocolate chips Add prunes, marshmallow cream, walnuts and vanilla. Pour into pan and chill. Cut into 48 pieces when firm. Yields 48 pieces
105 calories per piece with nuts 3Grams fat without nuts 2.5 per piece

So, Retta, I’m gonna try and hunt you down via email, but if you don’t hear from me by Sunday, when the book is out, STALK ME!!!

Congratulations, and thanks to all of you who participated. I’m gonna be a cooking fool for the next two weeks – all while watching A Christmas Story!

Joey W Hill!

There, did I get your attention?

AAD: Day 1 (kinda)

So, got up at the butt-crack of dawn for our “stop in Chicago , but no plane change” flight. Do the quotes clue you in that there was, indeed, a plane change? This very nearly ended in tragedy as a certain moron (who shall remain nameless :: coff, coff:: left her freakin Nook on the cirst plane.

A huge, wet, sloppy kiss to First Officer Dane who literally ran the concourse and found it for me.

Once in NOLA the skies opened up. Our oh-so-helpful taxi driver, who didn’t speak a word between “Where you go?” and “How you pay me?” refused to get out of the cab to unload our luggage, as he’s apparently made of arsenic (that melts in water, right?), but we were rescued by the world’s most awesome doorman.

The hotel, with a notable lack of in-room coffee pot, is lovely. So far the staff has been nothing short of wonderful. A brief bout of claustrophobia on my sister’s part kept us from the initial meet-n-greet, but we got our (kick ass) goodie bags, and managed an AMAZING boiled shrimp dinner at Pier 424. Upon our return, the gorgeous and charismatic Damon Suede, momentarily bereft of his harem, allowed me the sheer joy of recapturing one of the high points of GRL – the fanny squeeze. :: happy sigh::

So, we napped, ate, hugged the unmatchable Kelli K, editor goddess at EC! molested Damon, squeed over B.A. Tortuga, an said hi to a couple folks. A good start to the trip. Now I just have to find Joey and Brien and squeeze ’em ’til they squeak, and I’ll be a happy girl!
